This week I had the opportunity to speak for two groups of women. I was the speaker, but they were the teachers.
There are times in life when our greatest strength lies in our abilty to listen. Listening is our cue to knowing when we are in a teaching moment. When we listen with our heart, there are message we recieve that our head can’t understand. Everyday we receive messages which can penetrate our heart and give answers to our deepest desires.
In my workshop, one single mother shared her takeaway. Her words were simple, “There is light at the end of the tunnel, look for it.” We’ve all heard the phrase. It is said in so many instances we take it for granted. We’ve heard with our head, but it has lost its impact on our heart.
However, the heart part of the message “look for it” commanded my attention. It was an opportunity for me to move from hearing to listening. Listening implies a connection has been made. You are now hearing from a place of consciousness. The active part of self responsible for engagement.
How many times have you heard something but were not listening? A distraction comes your way and you miss it. Have you ever been on the phone when your child asks for something and you say yes? Children know how to get what they want through distraction. When you are not actively listening, you risk missing your cue for engagement. Answers given in these instantances, become those we often wish we could take back.
Here are a few tips for listening from the heart:
1. Become more conscious of your actions by putting thought into what you say/do rather than just giving an answer. As much as we like multitasking sometimes its not healthy. Focus on the task at hand, give it your undivided attention.
2. Recognize what you are hearing, is being said for the “first” time. No matter how many times a lesson comes its message is for the present moment. It doesn’t matter that it was said yesterday or will be said tomorrow. In this moment life is asking you to listen from your heart.
Listening from the heart, it an in the moment choice.
Until the next time!!
Designing your life,
